Scotland's recorded history began at the time of the Roman occupation of Britain; when England, Wales and the Scottish lowlands were occupied by the Romans and were known as Britannia and where the Scottish highlands were known as Caedonia. The Romans having failed to conquer the Highlands and deeming the venture too expensive for any potential gains withdrew back to modern day England and built Hadrian's wall to separate the Roman South and Barbarian North.
