Northern Ireland, or Ireland as it was at the time, became a part of the United Kindom with the signing of the Act of Union 1800; this formalised the personal union that Ireland had enjoyed with England since 1541, when Ireland procraimed Henry VIII to be King of Ireland as well as King of England.

It was in 1922 with the sesession of Irish Free State and the signing of the Anglo Irish Treaty that Northern Ireland became a separate state from the rest of Ireland and the UK became the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland is comprised of 6 counties; Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry and Tyrone; and offers many wonderful attractions and beautiful views for those who wisely choose to visit Northern Ireland.

Visitors to Northern Ireland have several options when it comes to transport and the best option for you is going to depend on where you're starting your journey.

Belfast is Northern Irelands main international hub with 2 international airports and a busy ferry port serving foot and car passengers from mainland united kingdom and further afield. Direct flights to Belfast are available from most major UK airports including all London airports, Manchester and Glasgow. Flight time from London is between 50 minutes and an hour.

Belfast also makes a great jumping off point for exploring the rest of Ireland, whether you’re hiring a car or connecting with other means of public transport.

Arriving in northern Ireland by air you also have the option of the City of Derry (Londonderry) Airport. Derry Airport is located just outside the city of Derry, the second largest city in Northern Ireland, as is situated in the North West of Northern Ireland. Flying to Derry airport may be more convenient if you plan on exploring Irelands North and West Coastlines. Ryanair operate regular flights from London to Derry.

From elsewhere in Ireland the fastest way into Northern Ireland is likely to be by road or rail. A high speed rail network runs between Dublin and Belfast and Northern Ireland is no more than 4 hours drive from most points in the Republic of Ireland.
